The ocean is crucial to our survival. Our biggest ecosystem is also our least understood. Ocean10 is a bold project to unlock the treasures of the deep and share them with the world through network media. With only 8% of life below the water known to man there is a whole world to discover.

Ocean 10

  • Ocean Ten Media Ltd are embarking on a decade of unique storytelling to bring the ocean to life for millions of people around the world.  Using the most advanced technologies, a global fleet of research vessels and a flock of prominent scientists, storytellers and adventurers our aim is to enable people to form a deep and personal connection with the ocean – our primary ecosystem.

For most people the oceans are an abstract because of their scale and inaccessibility. The World Ocean is our largest living structure, supporting 94% of the planet's species, producing 80% of the oxygen we breathe and covering 70% of the Earth's surface.  A significant increase in ocean research (made cost-effective through autonomy) is essential because the ocean biosphere is changing at an alarming rate: 30% of marine species are at risk of extinction, oceans are warming rapidly, up to 60% of corrals have died and approximately 12.7 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually. (source: IPCC). Data and media are key to informing policy change, education, decision making and to the next wave of commercial ocean development.

The vastness and unpredictable nature of the world oceans has meant that currently only an estimated 8% of life below the water has been discovered. We are entering a golden age for ocean research where new technologies and communications platforms will, for the first time, open up the wonders of the ocean in previously unimaginable ways. Autonomous marine drones, capable of multi month offshore missions and equipped with cameras, sound scanners and sensors are beginning to capture new and invaluable data; to better educate and inform decision making.

For decades Governments and leaders around the world have not prioritised ocean research, yet without healthy oceans, life on earth is severely threatened or could even cease to exist.  It is time to bring the ocean to life. Our aim is to democratise the ocean by developing and distributing the highest quality digital media – to bring the wonders of the ocean to life in unique ways and to create ocean experiences that allow us to form deeper relationships with the ocean.

Over the next 10 years our output is expected to include:

  • 40+ documentaries that outline the critical aspects of ocean health and conservation and explore ways of accelerating positive change.

  • 3+ immersive games that challenge humanity in both virtual and physical ocean worlds

  • 10+ events – the 10% for the Ocean summit – a virtual and physical gathering of the most influential people in the blue economy

  • 50+ research papers

  • 800+ news and press articles

  • 3+ AR/VR experiences for classrooms

Ocean Ten Media is backed by Vala Capital and is working with major broadcasters and TV networks to create a global distribution network for its content.  Working with Google and Apple the company has already secured in principal promoted distribution for its initial games.

Our Themes

Fearless Science

Our research focus is marine exploration and biological discovery in the most inaccessible corners of the sea. We partner with scientists eager to push the boundaries of research in their field—be it locating new species or studying never-before-seen biological phenomena—and we give them the tools they need to get the job done.

Global platform

Everything we do is made possible by our fleet of vessels made available through the Yachts for Science programme. This creates a global platform of highly capable vessels equipped with labs, marine drones, ROVs, subs and diving equipment that combined create the worlds largest marine research fleet.

Narrative storytelling

Using advanced underwater filmmaking tools, we document each moment of discovery—and then transform those moments into compelling stories we share with the world. From TV series to giant screen films, online and off, we reach our audiences wherever they are, to inspire in them the same love of the oceans that inspires us.
